Natural Capital Accounting

Learn how these Central Queensland graziers use natural capital accreditation to improve their land's ecological and productive potential.

The Leather Cattle Co has been recognised as one of the most sustainable cattle enterprises globally. Owners Melinee and Rob Leather run their grass-fed and EU-certified humane cattle enterprise across several Central Queensland properties, including Barfield Station in Banana Shire. In 2021, a Landcare Farming grant allowed them to undertake a project with Accounting for Nature, a non-profit organisation that provides a framework for primary producers to build and certify their environmental accounts.

In this video, Melinee and Dr Amanda Hansson from Accounting for Nature explain the various elements, drivers, benefits and challenges of embarking on a natural capital accounting project. The Leathers' journey is an inspiring story of how smart environmental stewardship can increase productivity, soil health, resilience and animal wellbeing - factors critical to safeguarding market access into the future.

Learn more about the Leathers' natural capital accounting journey and how it all began in a workshop attended by the Barfield Road Producer Group.
