The Falls Farm was utterly overrun by weeds and invasive species when Ben Johnston and Jess Huddart purchased it in 2013. This Growing Country original video examines their purposeful land clearing and how they and the team have restored the property's soil health and biodiversity.
Ever since the establishment of The Falls Farm, the team have endeavoured to constantly improve the soil quality. Christine Ballinger, Ben's mother and the farm manager, runs a soil amendment program with biannual testing and various applications of organic matter, compost and mineral inputs. She also uses distinct amendments and techniques to optimise the soils of various growing areas to better support what is growing there.
The video also examines their journey in identifying and leveraging a niche in the market. The Falls Farm team have had great success selling to some of South East Queensland's top chefs and offering produce boxes direct to consumers.
From a rundown and overgrown property to an enterprise that provides high-quality produce to some of the region's top restaurants, this is their story.
