Fifth-generation farmer David Moon spent his earliest years in the Lockyer Valley region of Queensland. Forty years ago, David's father moved the family west to St George to take advantage of the Balonne region's hot-dry climate and excellent soils.
Today, David and brother Andrew own and operate Moonrocks, a large broad-acre cropping enterprise which specialises in garlic and onion growing, as well as secondary crops such as sweetcorn, broccoli and pumpkins. Over the last few years David has led the development of a unique range of dehydrated garlic products. The success of G'day Garlic has drastically reduced on-farm wastage and tapped into the creative and marketing tallents of the younger members of the Moon family and wider Moonrocks team.
In 2021, Moonrocks was awarded the Hort Connections Syngenta Grower of the Year Award, in recognition of the Moon family's commitment to agricultural excellence and environmentally sustainable farming practices. The following year the Moon family backed up again when David accepted The Weekly Times Coles Horticulture Farmer of the Year at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
