Portuguese Bermudian Chris Faria grew up in the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, spending time gardening and landscaping with his family from an early age. On family trips to visit relatives in the Azores Islands, Chris was introduced to agriculture through his grandparents' dairy herd.
He left the land behind to attend university but finished as a self-described 'disillusioned' religious studies and philosophy student. His true calling was connecting with plants, agriculture and caring for the environment.
Chris has worked in horticulture since 2006, spending time working on a commercial farm as a labourer and studying mushroom cultivation.
He had a lightbulb moment while studying the sustainable agricultural system, GROW BioIntensive™, and has since gone on to study soil regeneration at Dr Elaine's Soil Foodweb School.
In late 2020, Chris had three babies - twins with his wife and The Agraliving Institute, a sustainable garden education business.
The Agraliving Institute is a for-profit social enterprise with a twofold approach: working with the community to encourage people to enter agriculture and take food security into their own hands, as well as promoting a sustainable, efficient form of gardening.
Chris is also a named Tradition Bearer by Bermuda's Department of Culture, which connects people with vital skills with apprentices.
